The aim of the Cross-Party Group on Tibet is to raise awareness about Tibet and its culture, to promote human rights in Tibet and to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the political situation, in line with international law and Tibetan Buddhist principles.
The group was founded in 2004 by Chris Ballance MSP. It was chaired throughout the previous parliamentary session by the Deputy Presiding Officer, Linda Fabiani MSP. It is currently chaired jointly by Ross Greer MSP (Scottish Greens) and Collette Stevenson MSP (SNP).
The group's Secretary is Eleanor Byrne-Rosengren, former Executive Director of Free Tibet and Tibet Watch, and the group's Treasurer is Roger Eames of Tibet Support Group Grampian.

Since its founding, the Group has been an active association of MSPs, engaged members of the public, civil society and research organisations. It is supported for research purposes by the Scottish Centre for Himalayan Research at the University of Aberdeen and by Tibet Watch, a UK-based charity with a team of Tibetan researchers based in Dharamsala, India. The Group also has a team of experienced members ready to aid MSPs in the organisation and work. We have built up strong links with UK and international organisations concerned with the situation in Tibet, including the Office of Tibet in London, the Central Tibetan Administration (Dharamsala, India), Free Tibet, International Campaign for Tibet, the Tibetan Community of the UK, Amnesty International and development and environmental organisations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. We also maintain close and friendly links with the local Tibetan refugee community in Scotland and the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Monastery in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire.
In recent years, the Group has hosted and organised a variety of events and gatherings, including:
